Prof Douglas’ method for running e-learning for two courses: Equity Valuation and Derivatives Pricing and Risk Management
Prof Douglas Streeter Rolph
Dr. Douglas Streeter Rolph is a Senior Lecturer of finance in the Engineering Systems and Design Pillar (ESD) at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Dr. Rolph has published research on modelling credit risk in Journal of Derivatives. His current research focuses on fintech ecosystems, financial inclusion, and the role of innovation in financial institutions.
Here are some notes from him.
It important to set up the logistics and ensure that software is set up. Also set the expectations with your students.
Logistics:
- 1 laptop for putting up announcements, eg. the sli.do link, class break timings. This laptop is probably used to monitor the sli.do answer board for student questions
- 1 laptop for presenting and sharing screen
- 1 proper microphone
- Zoom, specifically using the link to share and keeping to the same link throughout every class
- sli.do both for conducting in-class polls and checking on questions.
- Google Drive for all course material
- All students are kept muted throughout the class to prevent disruption. Sli.do is the only place to ask questions.
- Students put up their own name and are added into the class individually to ensure that they are actually students for the class. This is also used for attendance.
- Classes are all still recorded in case anything is missed during the class
- 15 minute break between 1h sessions
Stays back for students to call in to ask questions directly

Virtual Project Presentation
Assistant Professor Subburaj Karupppasamy, EPD
Our Term 7 course, 30.123 Healthcare Product Design, has culminated with a showcase of term-long medical device design projects. Our senior students teamed up with practicing clinicians and therapists from various healthcare institutions and MedTech companies across Singapore to deliver innovative product design solutions to current medical problems. This year, they have addressed unmet clinical needs related to surgical site infection, early rehabilitation of diabetic amputees, plantar fasciitis, turbinectomy, CPR training, and surgical tools for minimally invasive surgeries.
Join us virtually in our 3rd Innovative Healthcare Design Exhibition - 2020 to witness first-hand of their proposed ideas and experience the journey with them, the design process that eventually led to the delivery of these product design solutions.
When: 22 April 2020 [ Wednesday ]; 1.00 - 5.00 PM [SST]

The Virtual ESD 2D Project Showcase 2020
Dear all,
During the Spring semester, our Juniors are required to complete a 2D project - one that requires students to integrate the technical content of two courses as part of the ESD core curriculum.
In the project, they must connect with a real-world client who faces an operational problem and bring the tools of two core courses - 40.012 Manufacturing and Service Operations and 40.004 Statistics, to bear on that problem. It is not their first client-facing experience in our curriculum, but it is the first time they bear the full weight of the consultant’s role: guiding a project all the way from need identification to problem solution.
If you are looking for creative problem-solvers, systems thinkers who are data smart and operations savvy, come see what our students can do!
Take a virtual tour of this year’s 2020 ESD 2D Project Showcase.

Pearson Online Teaching Resources
LSL and SUTD Library met up with Pearson on their online teaching resources last week.
Pearson has got an array of digital solutions to support alternative ways to engage with your students (e.g. videos, interactives or simulations), a platform to assess how your students are performing (this could be formative or summative), or would like to save time by having a more data-driven approach to identify where your students are struggling.
If you are interested to find out more about if and how Pearson’s products can support you in Engineering, Engineering Systems, Information Systems or bridging classes (e.g. Physics, Chemistry and Maths), you could contact [email protected]

Practical tips for planning an Engaging Online Learning Experience for your Students
Tracy Willis, Pearson’s regional Head of Learning Design and Development, will share with you practical approaches for increasing engagement with students in online course delivery. We will cover planning your approach, questions to consider when selecting activities and media inclusions, considering cognitive load (including media constraints), pedagogical balance, and accessibility factors you may not be aware of. While conveyed in the context of online delivery, these approaches will challenge how your think about on-campus engagements as well, yielding benefits across both mediums.
